The Native Americans who lived in the coastal regions of America made their shelters from the natural materials in the area. The climate also affected the style of shelter they would build.

  • Chickee

In the Southeast, the people built structures using palm branches, palm leaves and bark, grasses and mud. One example of this type of shelter is the chickee. Due to the very hot weather, the chickee was designed to let the ocean breezes cool the structure so it was built without walls. The chickee had a roof made of palm leaves and mud sewn together over a frame. The shelter was supported by palm branch poles secured to a wooden base.
