The Native
Americans who lived on the Plains made great use of their most
important resource, the buffalo. They built these movable shelters out of
buffalo hide and sticks.
- Wickiups and
Earth Lodges
Other
types of structures found on the Midwest Plains included Wickiups and
Earth Lodges. The natural resources of the Plains were often limited to
grass, branches and mud, so the Native Americans used these items to build
their dwellings.
In the
Southwest, two different types of shelters were found depending on the
location. Hogans were small dome-shaped dwellings built of mud and sticks.
Pueblos were apartment-like shelters constructed of adobe, sun-dried clay
shaped into bricks. |
