Welcome to the fourth grade!  I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready for an exciting year ahead.  My name is Mrs. Pokorny and I am very much looking forward to working with each and every one of you this year.  Although my homeroom is Room 110, I will be teaching Social Studies to the entire fourth grade.  We will concentrate on learning about Ohio from past to present.  There will be many hands on activities for you to participate in.  It should prove to be a rewarding experience for all!

This summer, much time was spent attending baseball games that my younger son played in.  It was as exciting for me to watch the games as it was for him to play.  His team came in second in his division.  We also spent much time at the neighborhood pool.

The highlight of our summer was going to Canada .   We spent time at a cabin on Sand Lakes , where we went boating, fishing, and much relaxing.  The boys fished from sunrise to sunset.  We went on a charter with a professional fisherman and learned a great deal about fishing and life in Canada .  In the evening we could hear the sounds of many birds and animals, including the beautiful sounds of the loon.  It was very exciting to tour the Hershey Chocolate Factory.  Here we learned about the history of chocolate and how it is made.  The best part of the tour was sampling the delicious candy!  I look forward to meeting you and learning about you, your hobbies and your summer adventures.

Our Special Guest, Mrs. Vunak

The fourth graders from Room 110 had the pleasure of choosing a confirmation name for Mrs. Terri Vunak.  Mrs. Vunak is converting to Catholicism, and will be baptized and confirmed during the Easter Vigil Services.  The students took this responsibility very seriously.  After learning about Mrs. Vunak and her saint-like qualities, the students voted on a saint that most emulated these traits.  The confirmation name that was chosen was Anne, in honor of St. Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Grandmother of Jesus.  Anne means “The Gracious One” or “The Loving.”   St. Anne is the patroness of Christian Families.  We are confident that St. Anne will guide Mrs. Vunak throughout her life.

When Mrs. Vunak came to visit the fourth graders to discover the confirmation name that was chosen for her, she did not come empty handed.  She brought with her cookies and tootsie roll pops to share.  We extend our gratitude for her generosity.

We have truly enjoyed meeting Mrs. Vunak and will continue to pray for her as she nears her special day.

Fourth Grade Entrepreneurs

The fourth grade students learned through hands-on experience the challenges new entrepreneurs face in starting a business. After learning the four factors of production the children then began their own business. The fourth grade entrepreneurs came up with the idea to produce "Oompa Loompa Birds," which were to be sold to the third grade students. Advertisement posters were made by the students and posted in the hallway. They also came up with advertisement jingles that they presented on the school’s broadcast system. The third grade students were wonderful customers. Thanks to their support and the hard work of the fourth grade students, the business was a true success. The profits from this project, which totaled $100.00, went to support the Foundation for Community Betterment.  The fourth grade entrepreneurs learned a great deal from this experience. Awesome job Fourth Grade!

Transportation Dioramas

To help learn how Ohio’s economy grew in the late 1800’s, the children made Transportation Dioramas. The dioramas they made were of stagecoaches, covered wagons, keelboats, canal boats, steamboats, horse pulled trains and steam engine trains. They were to state how they were powered and how this form of transportation helped Ohio’s population and economy to grow. As you can see from the pictures below, we have many creative and talented fourth grade students.

Hale Farm & Village

The fourth grade students went on an exciting field trip to Hale Farm & Village.  The weather this year was delightful, as we were able to avoid the rain, which added to the children's enjoyment of the day.  They were able to observe many presentations of events that occurred in Ohio during the 1800's.  The children observed demonstrations given by a blacksmith and glassblower and experienced what it was like to be a student in a one-room schoolhouse.  They also were able to learn about manners, playing games, wool carding and other activities that occurred during this time period.  What a wonderful way to learn about how people from Ohio lived during the 1800's.

Thank you to the parents who helped to chaperone the children on the trip.  Your assistance was greatly appreciated.

State Research Project

The students from Grade 4, Room 112 have completed their State Research Project.  In an effort to reach out past our study of the State of Ohio, each child has been given a state to research.  Much of this project was completed during class time.  After completing their research, they were asked to type out their findings and add illustrations either from the internet or research books.  The states they researched were from the all of the various Regions of the United States.  No doubt you will enjoy reading their findings by clicking on the link below.  Fabulous job Fourth Graders!

A special thank you is extended to the parents who helped the children with the research and typing of their project.  You are wonderful!

Stay tuned for Grade 4, Room 111, who will be next to participate in this research project.
