2008 YEAR OF THE RAT |

On Tuesday, February 12, 2008, Fourth Graders
celebrated the Chinese New Year. The children learned about Chinese
customs and cultures.
Did you know that the Chinese New Year is determined by the Lunar Calendar? There is a celebration for fifteen days. Homes and businesses are cleaned, symbolizing "sweeping out the old" and "welcoming in the new"! Homes are decorated with fresh flowers and small trees. Special banners are made with New Year Greetings! New Year's Eve consists of a special meal with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. All the foods eaten symbolize something special. Children are allowed to stay up late and celebrate. It is believed that the longer the child can stay awake, the longer the parents will live. New Year's Day is a day for visiting friends and family. People bring special gifts of plants, flowers and food. Candies and rice cakes will sweeten the New Year! (notes contributed to the class by Emily and Mrs. Skerl)
