Bibliography Instructions for Fifth Grade Research

Good to know:
  • Bibliography entries are alphabetized by the first word in each entry.
  • Search engines such as Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, and Google are not web addresses. When citing a web page you must use the web address found in the address bar.
  • Individual entries are single spaced; double space between entries.
  • Bibliography entries are not numbered.
  • The second line on a bibliography entry is indented.
  • On the back of this page you will find a sample bibliography.

To cite information found in a book:

Last name of author, First name of author. Title. City: Publisher, Copyright year.

To cite information found in an encyclopedia:

"Title of subject." Encyclopedia title. Copyright year for the edition used.

To cite information found in an electronic encyclopedia (CD-ROM):

Last name of author, First name of author. (if available) "Title of subject." Name of CD-ROM. Year of Edition (ed.) CD-ROM. City:   Name of publisher. Copyright year.

To cite information found in a periodical (magazine, newspaper, etc.):

Last name of author, First name of author. "Title of article." Title of Periodical day month year of publication: pages.

To cite information from a website:

Last name of author, First name of author.(if available) "Title of webpage." Title of site. Date site was updated/created. (if given) Complete web address (Day month year you used the webpage).

To cite information from an interview:

Last name of the person interviewed, First name of the person interviewed. Type of interview (phone, letter, email, etc.). Day month year interview was conducted.
