A Typical Day in Kindergarten

We start our day in kindergarten with the morning routine. Throughout this time, the children are responsible for putting their things away in their lockers, putting their take-home folders in their mailboxes, and putting things away in their cubbies. After a child has completed these morning responsibilities, he/she may freely choose an activity from throughout the room.

After the morning routine, the class comes together as a whole group for circle time. During circle time the class participates in Morning Prayer and The Pledge of Allegiance. During circle time we discuss various elements of the calendar, talk about the 100s chart, make observations and chart the weather, and talk about any important news the children have to share.

Throughout the morning, the class actively explores the various subject areas, with seatwork spaced throughout the morning in an age-appropriate manner. Instructional techniques vary among the three class, with some subject areas being taught in whole group settings, and others in small group settings. The kindergartners enjoy a morning snack, followed by a 15 minute recess with the first graders.

At 12:15, the kindergartners eat lunch, followed by recess. A child has the option of buying a hot lunch or bringing a lunch from home. After recess, the students come back to the classroom for rest-time. After a short rest period, we continue with our academics throughout the afternoon.

Throughout the week, the children participate in various "specials", including physical education, music, art, computer, ABC class, and library. The kindergartners attend meet Mrs. K. in the gym twice a week. During the first semester, the children visit music class once a week; second semester, they participate in ABC class - Gesu's enrichment program. As a class, the children visit our the multi-media labs once a week, during which time the computers are used to enrich the learning the children are doing in the classroom (computers are also used throughout the day in each classroom.) Each kindergarten class makes a trip to the library once a week, where they listen to stories, learn about books, authors and illustrators, and are given time to check-out books.

In addition to all the "typical" things that happen in kindergarten, the children are treated to many special events during the year. Kindergartners are included in on assemblies, all-school Masses, Mini-Olympics, Field Day, performances and programs, and various field trips.  Each kindergartner is paired up with a sixth-grade buddy, with whom they spend time and celebrate special occasions throughout the year.  The children also belong to school-wide families, where they meet and participate in   activities once a month.
