Language Arts Seminar

The Language Arts Seminar for Grade 6 is conducted in the second semester of the school year.    Students share the role of facilitator as they polish their interpersonal, writing and presentation skills.  They set goals for themselves as they continue to grow in their knowledge and application of the Language Arts skills.

Using the Junior Great Books First Semester Series 6 as a text, the students study classic literature and use the Socratic Seminar method of discussion.  Socrates believed that people learned through questioning, listening, and discussion, and these students implement his philosophy.

Some of the stories included in the Junior Great Books Series 6 include:

THROUGH THE TUNNEL by Doris Lessing
RAYMOND'S RUN by Toni Cade Bambara
MY GREATEST AMBITION by Morris Lurie
A LIKELY PLACE by Paula Fox
THE MYSTERIES OF THE CABALA by Isaac Bashevis Singer
BAD CHARACTERS by Jean Stafford
CHURA AND MARWE  African folktale as told by Humphrey Harman
SUPERSTITIONS by Mary La Chapelle
THE LAST GREAT SNAKE by Mary Q. Steele
GASTON by William Saroyan
SOUMCHI by Amos Oz

Have you ever tried to accomplish something that was a new or hard concept for you?  What would be the spectrum of emotions involved?  What would you do first?  What tools would you use?  How would you feel when you had succeeded?  What would happen if you didn't?  Would you care about the task once you had finished the job?  How would you evaluate the risks and benefits?  Would your success or failure have an impact on later decisions?  What motivates a person to try something new?  Is there internal or external pressure?  Think about it!
