Students will understand that we
have a democratic government where leaders are elected by the people and
responsible to them. Students will define and distinguish among the three branches of the state and federal government. Students will develop an appreciation for the way checks and balances operate in our government. Students will identify services provided by state and federal governments. Students will identify local governments and describe municipal and county governments. Students will understand that it is our right and responsibility to vote. Students will understand that it is the responsibility of citizens to pay taxes to provide services. Students will develop an understanding of the need to conserve natural resources. Students will understand that recycling and limiting pollution are key ways to take care of our environment for the future. Rivers and Lakes Ohio Divide Elevation Maps Map Scales Road Maps Circle and Line Graphs |
Students will understand the
importance of rivers and lakes as a form of transportation and important
natural resource. Students will identify the source, mouth, and tributaries of a river. Students will be able to identify the Ohio Divide on a map and also the rivers north and south of the Divide. Students will experience various types of elevation maps. Students will use a map scale strip to accurately measure distances on various types of maps. Students will learn key symbols found on a road map. Students will practice getting from one place to another by employing symbols found on road map. Students will create circle and line graphs using appropriate types of information. |

Students will learn some of Ohio's
key natural resources. Students will categorize Ohio's resources as renewable, nonrenewable, fuel, or minerals. Students will understand the importance of conservation of our Ohio Natural Resources. Students will explore the impact of agriculture and food processing on Ohio's economy. Students will learn the factors of production and how this helps to develop the economy of Ohio. In the Soybean project, students will explain and demonstrate how to use reference sources. Students will distinguish between primary and secondary sources. Students will identify causes and effects in historical information. In the Business project, students will demonstrate decision making process by setting a goal and by identifying and evaluating choices. |

began to move to the suburbs in the 1950's. Students will experience how Ohioans had fun in the 1950's. Students will identify and examine three areas of unrest in Ohio during the 1960's. Students will identify the Aftican Americans who played an important role in the struggle for equal rights in Ohio. Students will describe Ohio's economy during the 1970's and 1980's and explore the role that services play in Ohio's modern economy. Students will explore the impact that economic growth has had on the environment of Ohio. Students will explain the cultural origins of some of Ohio's many festivals and celebrations by exploring origins of people who originally lived in these areas. Students will describe many kinds of recreation and sporting events held in Ohio and also the famous people involved in these activities. Students will identify key heroes, past and present, from Ohio. Students will identify Ohioans who have become Presidents of the United States. |
