Students in junior high are in an important state of transition and exploration. Each student is engaged in a process of self-discovery as they experience the tremendous physical, cognitive, and emotional growth that occurs during these two years. Our goal is to provide a balance environment which gives guidance and support but also allows for their growing need for freedom and independence.
Classes are structured in block schedules. This means that students have three 90 minute periods a day for their core subjects and another set of three core subjects covered the following day. This allows teachers more time to develop concepts and gives students an opportunity to focus on three main homework assignments nightly. Students also have an elective period each day for the special subjects. (PE, Humanities, Music, Art, Latin, Writing/Debate) They develop their own schedule for these electives based on the focus of the subject for each term.
Additionally there is a strong focus on leadership and service as students learn the importance of sharing their talents with the school community and the local and global communities as well.
