
Chess Club
Over 60 students participated in the fourth session of the Gesu Chess Club during the winter of 2011. This club meets on Tuesday nights and will resume again in February 2012.
Junk Box Science This activity challenges junior high scientists to use a given set of materials to create an invention that might solve a given problem.
Science Club
The Science Club is open to all students in grades 4-6 who are interested in hands-on science experimenting. Students will prepare for the Gesu Olympiad which is held in January. Students also have an option to attend the Diocesan Science Olympiad at John Carroll University. Science Club will begin in Fall 2011.
Science Olympiad
Students from the intermediate grades in local public and private schools compete in science investigations and activities at one of our local universities. Prior to this competition Gesu students have had opportunities to participate in a school competition in early winter as well as a diocesan competition which is held in late winter.

Stock Market Club
This club is open to all students in Grades 7-8 who would like to have a chance to take $100,000 and watch it grow in the stock market. Students participate with their team members in an online simulation game and have total control of their portfolios for a ten week period. (Played in fall and spring of each year)

LEGOS at Lunch Bunch
This activity is open to students in grades 4,5,6 during noon recess on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Creativity abounds as they collaborate on interesting projects and test out their ideas.
LEGO Olympiad
This competition is open to students in grades 3-6 and it is held on a Saturday in the early spring. Students work in teams to play a LEGO model which they will have to recreate on the day of the competition. They must include scale drawings and come prepared to build the project within one hour’s time. The other option is to participate in the themed competition which involves creating a project after the theme has been announced on the morning of the competition. Preparation for this competition begins on Tuesday afternoons in mid March.
Robotics Club
This club will focus on programming skills and problem solving using LEGO NXT software and building blocks. The club will begin in mid September and meet from 3-4:30 PM on Tuesday evenings.
First LEGO League
This activity involves teams of students in grades 5-8 that meet weekly during first semester to develop two solutions to the problem posed by the First LEGO League. The solution involves the creation of a robot as well as a 5 minute presentation which will be shared and judged at the local competitions. This club will begin again in Fall 2011. We are anxious to learn about the new challenge.
Our sixth grade team was named “First Runner Up” for the State FLL tournament and our fifth grade team received the Gracious Professionalism Award at the FLL competition held at Hudson Middle School in Jan. 2011.
